Imagination, Curiosity and Perseverance -Three Key Words During University
Prof. Wen Delivered a Speech at SGE Undergraduate Orientation Ceremony for Class 2021
On September 11th 2021, the SGE Undergraduate Orientation Ceremony for Class 2021 was held in D1120, New Main Building, Beihang. Prof. Wen Dongsheng, Dean of SGE, delivered the speech in English.
First of all, Prof. Wen congratulated all the freshmen on their comprehensive achievements during high school and their outstanding performance in the College Entrance Examination. It is a wise and correct decision to learn in SGE. With top-ranking faculty, and diverse groups of talented students, SGE is more than just a place to get education.
How will you spend four years in college? Why do you choose SGE and Beihang? What does university mean to you? Prof. Wen questioned. Everyone has different perspectives and a unique answer. He retrospected his experience from undergraduate study in Beihang to study and work abroad, and then went back to Beihang for teaching and researching. He inspired students to have a plan for their future career at the moment entering the university, so as to make their undergraduate years more planned and meaningful.
Prof. Wen then explained the education philosophy of SGE, namely International, Interdisciplinary, Innovation, Integration and Leadership, which is abbreviated to I4L. These five characteristics will be focused and delivered in courses of every major in SGE. He expected freshmen to observe problems from an international perspective, to solve problems through communication and integration, and to be innovative and have courage to bring forth new ideas, as well as to acquire the engineering leadership in cross-cultural cooperation.
Meanwhile, Prof. Wen also stressed that SGE courses and programs are all in English. Therefore, it is important to lay a solid foundation in the language. In order to help students adapt to the new learning environment, the faculty also set up various English courses and abundant academic activities. All of the supporting actions will effectively remove language barriers for curriculum studies.
In the end, Prof. Wen expressed his expectation for the freshmen by three English words, they’re "Imagination", "Curiosity" and "Perseverance" which are also the names of three Mars rovers in human history. The Imagination embodied in "Zhurong" symbolizes innovation and progress. Curiosity symbolizes the desire for knowledge and enthusiasm for exploration. Perseverance symbolizes courage in the face of difficulties and the courage to explore the unknown fields. The three qualities will accompany new students on their way ascending to peaks in university as well as future career.
