Liberal Arts Lecture–Intercultural Communication by Pro. Lueny Morell

OnNov.6th, 2019, Lueny Morell, the vice dean of the School of General Engineering, Beihang University, hold a lecture in Beihang Shanhe Campus, about“Intercultural Communication”.

She firstly introduced the topic and discussed the learning objectives and agendafor the lecture, which is to discuss why communication is important, distinguishbetween communication and emotional quotient, identify various cultures’communication styles, apply multicultural communication.

Dr.Morell first introduced the topic by asking the students to watch a video ofpeople communication with each other, then introduced different competenciesthat enable a person to become a good employee. She stressed that communicationskills were one of the most important competencies that the employers werelooking for on people’s resumes. She used her example of communication with herhusband to stress that a good communication can help people get things donewhereas a poor communication might result in quarells.

Next,she introduced to the students the 7 elements of communication and the conceptof emotional intelligence, explaining to the students the mechanisms ofcommunication. Dr. Morell explained that there were multiple kinds ofcommunication, including verbal and non-verbal, and she pointed out thatnon-verbal communication usually conveys more information than verbalcommunication.

Then,Dr. Morell explained the concept of cross-culture communication to the studentsand pointed out the importance of understanding and communicating with othercultures. She introduced the national communication patterns from variouscountries with vivid examples, which made it easier for the students tounderstand the communication styles of different cultures. Dr. Morell gave someadvice on students on how to be better at communication and presentations.

After that, Dr. Morell asked the students to draw their own culture icebergs, adiagram that explains what foreigners think about the Chinese people and whatthe Chinese people think of themselves. Students actively responded and gavemany interesting key words of what foreigners might think of the Chinese peopleand whether these assumptions might be correct.

To conclude, the lecture ended in a success. The students have learned much moreabout communication and its importance. They also have a better understandingof communication between different cultures.
