The Faculty and Students of SGE Were Invited to Participate in the Fourth Global Grand Challenge Summit

The fourth Global Grand Challenges Summit, co-hosted by Royal Academy of Engineering, Chinese Academy of Engineering and  National academy of engineering, was held in London, UK, from September 12 to 18. The summit focused on 14 major engineering and technology challenges human beings facing in the 21st century, aiming to inspire the young generation to devote themselves to engineering and technology, and deal with major global challenges through engineering methods. The theme of the summit is Engineering in an Unpredictable World. Upon invitation from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, under the support of the School League Committee and the International Exchange and Cooperation Department, Beihang team composed by Lee Tianhao, Liu Xianzhong, Han Shaohang from SGEand other teams from Tongji University, Central South University, Wuhan University, Chongqing University participated in the forum on behalf of China.

Student competition is one of the Global Grand Challenges Summit activities.From September 13 to 16, 300 undergraduate students from the UK, China and the United States gathered in London to take part in the innovation of technology and creative business plan competition (Collaboration Lab), which means thatcollaborating across cultures and disciplines and developing innovative tools to address major global challengesthrough the innovative ideas. All the students were reorganized into new teams, and each consisted of members from three countries. New teams met new challenges.They collaborated and learned from each other's skills and experiences, learned from each other's strengths, and put forward the solutions to major challenges in limited time. On the last day of the summit, each mixed team woulddemonstrate their project proposal in the exhibition, and the judges would review them. Algae warriors, a project under the guidance of our school's team teacher Zhao Qiudi, stood out among the 50 team projects and achieved a TOP10. The projects of the other three students were also highly appraised and appreciated by the judges at home and abroad, including Academician Deng Zhonghan and Academician Duan Baoyan.

From September 17 to 18, our teachers and students participated in the forth Global Grand Challenges Summit, and more than 900 representatives from the world's science and engineering industry, enterprises and universities and colleges attended the summit. More than 20 academicians, experts and business representatives from China, the United States and the United Kingdom presented the conference report and had a warm interaction with the delegates. The daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, princess Anne (now the eldest princess), attended the opening ceremony of BBS to deliver a welcoming speech and meet the student representatives. She mentioned that with the unremitting efforts of people from all walks of life around the world, the world we live in will become a better place. The topics consisted of “The role of engineering projects in an unpredictable world” “What does artificial intelligence technology mean for our work and life”“What kind of digital technology is ethical” “How do innovative practices change our world” “How does engineering reduce the risk of climate change” “How do we build a world that can feed 10 billion people in the future”and etc.

In the summit, our teachers and students discussed and exchanged actively to express themselves. They sound out the voice of Beihang, told the story of Beihang, and put forward Beihang program in the important stage of international technology innovation, which demonstrated that Beihang responds to global challenges and fulfills our responsibility for common development with universities around the world.

This activity is of far-reaching significance to broaden students' international vision, deepen their understanding of the concept of a community with a Shared future for mankind, enhance students' awareness and abilities of innovation, guide students to become world-class leading talents who can devote themselves to building a great modern socialist country in the future, and cope with major global challenges in the future. As an international demonstration college of universities, the School ofGeneral Engineering will continue to be committed to building a first-class demonstration base for general engineering talents, and cultivate leading international engineering talents with global vision, integrated system and innovation ability.  

The first three Global Grand Challenges Summit were held in London, Beijing and Washington in 2013, 2015 and 2017 respectively.And the fifth Global Grand Challenges Summit will be held in China in 2021.
