1.Intrudction

Background

SGE is a new school of engineering within Beihang University, started in 2016. Selected by the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs and the Ministry of Education of China as an “International Model School” with a “Propulsion Project for an International Model School of Higher Education” it has a focus towards being a “Double First-Rated” program (world class university, world class in the disciplines). SGE aims at becoming a model of international teaching and pushes to bring about a comprehensive reform to Beihang University and higher education in China. This International Seminar is the first of a series of international events SGE expects to organize for both BUAA and China universities in support of its goals. In 2018 it brings together twelve (12) speakers from seven (7) countries – Canada, Chile, India, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Spain and the USA - and four (4) Chinese speakers.

Seminar Objectives

Present, reflect and discuss the importance of curriculum design in enhancing universities’ response to society’s needs in the 21st century.

The Seminar Program will

Bring together internationally recognized experts from academia, industry, accreditation and government to share and discuss the roles of outcomes-based engineering education in the 21st century

Share engineering schools’ transformations to outcomes-based education

Present strategies to integrate into the engineering curriculum important skills like ethics, entrepreneurship and industry 4.0 competencies

Understand the importance of engineering education accreditation to enhance quality and international recognition

Explore best practices in innovating the curriculum and learning experiences to develop student competencies through multidisciplinary experiences like capstone projects, service learning, data science

Discuss the importance of building multi-university and multi-national partnerships to share and augment learning experiences

Provide ample time for reflection and discussion through roundtable discussions

Format

Short presentations, roundtable discussions, high level of interaction among speakers and attendees.
