On the afternoon of October 25, 2018, SGE held 5th Global Top Engineers Series Literal Arts Lectures at Shahe campus. Prof. Harold P. Sjursen and Assistant Prof. Willem Erland
gave the lectures regarding "The Place of Engineering in a World of Rapid Change, Discovery and Innovation" and "Studying in Europe-What to Expect?" respectively. Over 100 students attended the lecture.
Harold Sjursen is Professor at School of General Engineering, Beihang University. He is also Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at both New York University – Shanghai and New York University – Abu Dhabi, as well as Professor Emeritus of Technology, Culture and Society at New York University – Tandon School of Engineering / Polytechnic Institute. Prof. Harold used examples to explain the identification of engineering and its relations with science, creative imagination innovation and invention.
Willem Eerland is Assistant Professor at School of General Engineering, Beihang University. He achieved the Ph.D. degree from University of Southampton and Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from Delft University of Technology. His research focuses on Adaptive Control and Computer Simulation. Combining with his own educational experiences, Willem shared the advantages of overseas education, and explained the differences in teaching, learning and living within China's and western universities as well as pointed out the necessity of enriching overseas time for good preparations for future employment.
When it came to the end of the lecture, many students reflected their confusion about the choice of the major and worries of the overseas life, and they would like to have more communications with international faculty. For this point, School of General Engineering, as International Model School, will pay more efforts to hold various activities for all the students at Beihang University to have conversations with international experts.
