September 22, 2018, a face-to-face meeting hosted by Zhao Qiudi, the Assistant Dean and Director of Student Support Centre of School of General Engineering, Beihang University was successfully held between the 2018 freshmen of School of General Engineering and their growth mentors at Room 1120, Building D, New Main Building. All the 2018 freshmen and two school counselors Sun Boyang and Li Chao attended the meeting.
At the meeting, Zhao Qiudi firstly gave a brief introduction to the growth mentoring system as well as some plans and arrangements for mentoring activities to be held in this semester. The growth mentors at School of General Engineering, Beihang University, selected from intramural outstanding teachers with foreign degrees and ample student work experiences, are hired to boost students’ personalized development counseling, to help students adapt to the international studying environment and small class setting in a better way, to care for students’ mental growth, to guide students to set up clear learning purposes and growth targets, and to promote students’ knowledge, capability and quality development in a coordinating manner. The mentoring system is established specific to different students according to their individual differences, aiming to help students have a deeper understanding of learning characteristics and requirements in college, lead students to develop learning interests and achieve a good mastery of learning methods, and provide students with all-rounded growth guidance. Four growth mentors for the 2018 freshmen are Prof. Lang Lihui and Prof. Luo Sida from the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, Prof. Jiang Chongwen from the School of Aeronautic Science and Engineering, and Prof. Lei Peng from the School of Electronic and Information Engineering.
Later, every mentors shared their experiences and views of growing with students and extended positive affirmations for the international teaching model in the School of General Engineering and expectations for the future of students. Prof. Lang Lihui shared his own learning and working experiences and expressed his perceptions on the responsibilities of a growth mentor quoting Han Yu’s words: “A teacher is one who passes on the truth, imparts knowledge and dispels doubts.”
Prof. Luo Sida used his personal experiences of studying and researching abroad to inspire students to lay a solid foundation at undergraduate level, strengthen English capabilities, and determine future directions as soon as possible. Mentor Jiang Chongwen exchanged his views on hot issues facing college students with use of witty words and rich examples and showed his willingness to provide study support for students to help them get the most out of learning experience. In the end, Mentor Lei Peng demonstrated his research achievements in the intelligent perception system and invited students to visit and study in the research laboratory in the future.
Students asked questions actively and mentors responded seriously in the following iterative session.
Students were then divided into four groups, had an in-depth communication with their respective growth mentors and took a group photo in the end.
Through this exchange meeting, students had a closer interaction with growth mentors, broadened their horizons by means of listening to mentors’ advice, cleared up confusion and built up confidence as a freshman, and became highly-motivated to study. Students said they benefit a lot from this exchange activity and are infused with expectations for the future. Under the guidance of growth mentors, the 2018 freshmen of School of General Engineering will be bound to adapt to new college life promptly and compose a more brilliant chapter in the international platform.
